On returning home from work I was somewhat surprised to find 9 Jackdaws in the duck run. They appear to have got in through a small hole in the roof netting so with a landing net and bag of bird bags I started to catch them. 8 new and a retrap from 2014 (just under five years old) were all colour ringed as part of the Jackdaw project.

Methods

The Southern Colour Ringing Group is running a project to study Jackdaws. The project covers a large area of the south-east of the UK and several group members are using the rings in London and the home counties.

Birds are caught either in mist nets or traps and birds are also ringed in nest boxes. We fit colour rings to birds ringed (orange with black letters and a three character alphanumeric code). There are many more bird-watchers looking for colour-ringed birds, so this greatly improves our chances of understanding the movements of the birds from this project.

If you see a bird with one of our colour rings, please use the submission form or send details (ring-code, date, location, species) to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
